At a glance
  • 7 stages / 82 km / 7,050 m+ across the three massifs of Picos
  • Includes Cabaña Verónica (Diego Mella, 2,325 m, 18 spots on a sheer wall)
  • Six guarded refugios: Jermoso, Verónica, Urriellu, Cabrones, Ario, Vegarredonda
  • Bookings managed by Picuco (Verónica 3-4 months ahead) + transfers
  • Official passport stamped at each refuge (6 stamps at the close)

What you'll experience

  1. Collado Jermoso · ~4 hrs

Direct ascent from Valdeón to the Collado Jermoso refuge (2,064 m), on the south face of the Central Massif. Short day to get acclimated. Spectacular views at the valley’s end. Passport stamp.

  2. Jermoso → Cabaña Verónica · ~3 hrs

Short but demanding trek to Cabaña Verónica (Diego Mella, 2.325 m), with 18 beds nestled into the cliff face. The most scenic stage of the Ring: exposed traverses and views of Urrieles. Early arrival, a well-deserved rest.

  3. Veronica → Vega de Urriellu · ~3 hrs

Descent via Horcados Rojos towards Vega de Urriellu (Delgado Úbeda, 1.953 m), the refuge below Naranjo de Bulnes. A short day allowing you to enjoy views of Picu from the meadow. Some groups stay here an extra day to rest or climb Naranjo with a hired guide.

  4. Cabrones Peak → ~3 hours

Short and challenging trek through the gorge to Jou de los Cabrones (José Ramón Lueje, 2.040 m), the most basic shelter on the Ring. Arrival at the heart of the Central Massif.

  5. Bulnes · ~4 hours

Long descent to the town of Bulnes, overnight stay in La Terenosa or a rural house depending on availability. Complete change of scenery: from the high karst landscape to the green Cares valley. Dinner in town, not at a mountain refuge.

  6. Bulnes → Vega de Ario · ~7 hrs

The longest stage. Ascent from Bulnes along the Camín Real, crossing passes in the Western Massif and arrival at the Marqués de Villaviciosa refuge in Vega de Ario (1,630 m). Depart before eight o'clock.

  7. Ario → Vegarredonda → Valdeón · final stage

Pass through Vegarredonda (additional stamp if included in the reservation) and descent to the valley until Posada de Valdeón. End of the crossing, picked up by Picuco. Passport with six stamps.

Who this fits

With friends Adventure Disconnection
Built for very fit hikers looking for their major Cantabrian trek, for couples and small groups with previous high-mountain experience, for those who have done Vindio or equivalent and want the classic full version. Not the right fit for a first multi-day trek (better Vindio), for those who have never slept in a guarded refuge, or with doubts about fitness for 7 consecutive days.

Frequently asked

Got a question not listed here? Just ask.

In what order are the stages done?
The wardens recommend anticlockwise from Valdeón toward the Central Massif (Collado Jermoso → Verónica → Urriellu → Cabrones → Bulnes → Ario → Vegarredonda → back to Valdeón). The first day is demanding but you reach Urriellu with fresh legs. Clockwise is possible, but the first day's elevation is less manageable.
Is Cabaña Verónica really that hard to book?
Yes. 18 spots right in the Central Massif corridor, the warden (Diego Mella) takes requests from February for July-August. Picuco handles this booking 3-4 months ahead, it's the most strategic part of the package.
Do I need alpine experience?
Not technical (no ice axe or crampons in summer). But high-mountain hiking experience: karst terrain, exposure at heights up to 2,500 m, narrow col passes. Essential to have done at least 5 consecutive days with a pack previously and slept in several refugios.
What if I'm flagging on day two?
It's the reality for many. Picuco is on the phone — if a stage becomes unsustainable we can look for emergency descents. But the official Anillo system assumes you cover all stages; reshuffling bookings in high season is hard. Better to come well prepared.
What do I pack?
10-12 kg: sleeping liner, layered clothing (warm layer for Verónica), windbreaker, headlamp with spare batteries, B-rated boots, poles, beanie and thin gloves, microfibre towel, daily water, snacks, minimal first-aid kit, charged phone.
When should I come?
Mid-July to mid-September. June may have hard snow at Horcados Rojos and other high passes (>2,200 m) without proper gear. After 1 October days are short and new snow appears.
Why not Extrem? What changes?
Extrem adds a Liébana and Andara loop — 9 days instead of 7, 110 km instead of 82, 9,350 m+ instead of 7,050 m+. It's the full version for those who've already done several long treks. Tres Macizos is the 'classic great trek' of the Anillo.
