What you'll experience

  1. Vega de Ario · ~8 hrs

Departure from Valdeón northwards through the Cares Gorge, ascent to Pandébano pass and descent to Lago Ercina. Final climb to the Marqués de Villaviciosa refuge, in Vega de Ario, at 1,630 m. Arrival in the afternoon, passport stamp and dinner at the refuge.

  2. Vegarredonda · 4-6 h

Short day. Hike through the lakes area and crossing to Vegarredonda (1,460 m), a historic shelter in the Western Massif. Stamp and early rest to prepare for the long stage tomorrow.

  3. Vegabaño → Vegarredonda · 8-10 h (the long one)

The most demanding stage of the Vindio. Crossing through the heart of the Western Massif, high passes and a long descent to Vegabaño (1.330 m). Depart before eight o'clock. Arrival at the shelter in the afternoon, registration.

  4. Vegabaño → Posada de Valdeón · ~4 hrs

Descent into the valley towards Valdeón. Easier day, tired legs but gentle terrain. Arrival in town, end of the crossing, pickup by Picuco. Passport completed with all three stamps.

Who this fits

With friends Adventure Disconnection
Built for first multi-day hut-to-hut treks, for fit hikers who have done multi-day sections but want a concrete objective, for couples or small groups looking for a high-mountain week without going alpine. Not the right fit for absolute beginners (this is high mountain, not an easy GR) or for those wanting Cabaña Verónica — that one is only on Tres Macizos and Extrem.

Frequently asked

Got a question not listed here? Just ask.

What are the 4 exact stages?
Posada de Valdeón → Vega de Ario (~8 h). Vega de Ario → Vegarredonda (4-6 h). Vegarredonda → Vegabaño (8-10 h, the longest). Vegabaño → Posada de Valdeón (~4 h). The times are orientative from the official system; your rhythm may vary.
Do I need previous experience?
Yes — at least 3-4 consecutive days of prior mountain hiking, having slept at least one night in a guarded refuge. Vindio is the most accessible Anillo modality but it's still high mountain: karst terrain, serious elevation gain, austere refugios.
Why Vindio and not Tres Macizos, for me?
If you've never done a multi-day hut-to-hut trek, if your last serious hike was a while ago, or if Cabaña Verónica sounds too alpine, start with Vindio. The wardens themselves recommend doing it before tackling the Central; it's not marketing.
When can it be done?
From 1 June to 15 October (official refugio opening dates). Best window: July to mid-September. In June there may be hard snow at some cols; in October days are short and new snow can appear.
How far in advance to book?
For July-August, the 3 refugios book 6-8 weeks ahead minimum. Picuco handles it, you don't call each refuge. In low season (June, September, October) midweek there's more margin.
What do I pack?
8-10 kg: sleeping liner, layered clothing, warm layer (yes, even in August), windbreaker, headlamp, B-rated boots, poles, microfibre towel, daily water, snacks. Main meals at the refugios.
What if I can't finish a stage?
The official system is designed so that each stage ends at a guarded refuge. If you find yourself exhausted or weather changes, contact Picuco's phone backup and we reorganise based on real options (changing refuge isn't always possible in high season — depends on availability).
