  • 9 stages / 110 km / 9,350 m+ across the three full massifs
  • Includes Cabaña Verónica + Casetón de Andara + Liébana descent
  • Eight guarded refugios total, the most complete in the system
  • Modality referenced in the official system as the full version

What you'll experience

  1. Valdeón → Jermoso → Verónica

Direct ascent to Collado Jermoso (~4 h) and short crossing the next day to Cabaña Verónica (~3 h, 2.325 m). As with Tres Macizos up to here.

  2. Veronica → Liébana · ~1 hr, descent to the valley

Descent to Fuente Dé and the Liébana valley. A short, unusual day – unique on the entire Ring where you sleep in a town, not in a mountain hut. Tama Inn, Espinama or equivalent depending on availability.

  3. Liébana → Casetón de Andara · 7-8 h

Challenging ascent to the Eastern Massif and arrival at Casetón de Andara, the only guarded refuge in the Oriental. Exclusive stage for Extrem. Stamp in your passport.

  4. Andara → Urriellu → Cabrones · Red Horcados Ridge cable

Central Massif Loop. Stage from Andara to Urriellu (6 h) including a shortcut down via the Horcados Rojos cable car. The following day, short crossing to Cabrones (3 h). You are right in the heart of the Ring.

  5. Bulnes → Ario → Vegarredonda → Valdeón → Cabárceno

Descent to Bulnes (4 h), long ascent to Vega de Ario (7 h), crossing to the Western Massif and final descent to Valdeón. Passport with 8 stamps. End of the crossing, pickup by Picuco.

Who this fits

With friends Adventure Disconnection
Built for mountaineers with several previous seasons of 5-7-day hut-to-hut treks, for small physically compact groups (ideally 2-4), for those who have done Tres Macizos at least once. Not the right fit for those seeking their first long trek (better Vindio or Tres Macizos), those with vertigo sensitivity or no experience in exposed karst terrain.

Frequently asked

Got a question not listed here? Just ask.

How does Extrem differ from Tres Macizos?
Extrem adds two stages: descent to Liébana (real valley drop) and climb to Casetón de Andara (Eastern Massif). Total: 9 days vs 7, 110 km vs 82, 9,350 m+ vs 7,050 m+. Not marginal — a whole extra week with two overnights and much more elevation.
Who is Extrem for?
Mountaineers with previous experience on 5-7-day hut-to-hut treks. If you haven't done Tres Macizos or equivalent in other systems (Pyrenees, Alps), it's not your modality. The wardens are clear: Extrem is done after having completed the full Anillo at least once.
What's the Horcados Rojos cable?
A safety cable installed on a vertical step of the Central Massif, used as a shortcut to descend toward Urriellu. The official Anillo organisation mentions it as part of the Extrem route. It's not a via ferrata: it's a fixed cable on an exposed descent. Requires steady feet and no vertigo.
When can it be done?
Only between 15 June and 15 September really — outside those dates, conditions at the high Central passes aren't reliable for the Extrem version. Best window: second half of July and first of August.
How far ahead to book?
4-5 months for Cabaña Verónica + Casetón de Andara. For the other refugios, 8-10 weeks. Requests open in February-March for July-August slots.
What do I pack?
12-14 kg max: sleeping liner, layered clothing with warm layer (yes, in August at 2,300 m), waterproof windbreaker, headlamp with spare batteries, B-rated boots in good condition, poles, beanie, gloves, daily water, energy snacks, phone + power bank, first-aid kit. Don't bring anything that doesn't add — 9 days with a pack.
What if a storm hits mid-stage?
Some refugios have emergency bivouac. If the storm is serious, descent points to the valley exist from almost any stage (Bulnes, Sotres, Liébana, Valdeón). Picuco coordinates exit from the phone backup. But the official Extrem system assumes operating conditions — if forecast is bad, better to reschedule beforehand.
