At a glance
  • Caving suitable from age 5 with a guide who knows how to talk to kids
  • Short distances: everything under 30 minutes by car
  • Family country house with a large room and home-cooked breakfast, not an impersonal hotel
  • Customisable: calm kayak, photographic cave, Cabárceno or pony if the cave does not fit

What you'll experience

  1. Arrival and waterfall viewpoint.

You enter the rural house, leave your things and drive 15 minutes up to the Asón Waterfall viewpoint. Fifty meters of water cascading down between vertical walls, an open and safe spot for the little ones to take photos at the edge. Dinner in town and early to bed.

  2. Introductory caving in Cave El Caracol

Three hours in the cave with a local guide who knows how to explain formations to kids. Helmet with headlamp, change of clothes for afterward. Departure and home-cooked meal at the rural house.

  3. Gentle hiking to the source of the river.

One-hour hike there and back to the viewpoint of the spring. Atlantic forest, stops at the river, the little ones take stones and sticks as treasures. Quiet afternoon in town and family dinner.

  4. Cave paintings and descent to the coast.

Long breakfast, guided tour of the cave paintings at the Cueva de Covalanas (World Heritage Site, 30-minute tour, accessible from age 6) and descent to the Laredo promenade: coastal walk, ice cream, lunch with sea views before getting back in the car.

What's included

This is what the bundle covers. If you want to tweak something, we'll sort it in the proposal.

Lodging

  • 2 nights in a spacious country house, family room + home-cooked breakfasts
A village country house in the valley, family room with double bed + bunks, common room with fireplace and games, hearty home-cooked breakfast. 10 minutes by car from the waterfall, 5 from Ramales for dinner.

Activities

  • Beginner caving in Cueva El Caracol (Arredondo)
Kids put on a helmet with headlamp and enter an accessible cave where limestone formations and a no-harness water section unfold. A local guide who knows how to talk to children, two to three hours inside. They come out with their heads full of images and their feet a little wet.
  • Guided hike to the source of the Asón river
An accessible one-hour walk each way up to the source viewpoint, the waterfall. Gentle slope, Atlantic forest shade, stops so the kids can touch the river water. Suitable from age 5.

Transfers

  • Optional pickup in Santander (airport or station)
If grandparents or family are traveling without a car, we can arrange transportation from Seve Ballesteros Airport or the Santander train/bus station to the accommodation (approx. 50 minutes). Child seats are available upon request at booking. Cost depends on the number of people; will be confirmed in the lead.

Meals

  • Saturday family meal
Between a morning in the cave and an afternoon hike, a break for a leisurely meal. You choose the plan that best suits the kids’ pace: an outdoor picnic or a quiet table indoors.

Extras

  • Welcome family briefing + flexible plan
Upon arrival on Friday we’ll give you a short briefing (about 20 minutes) with the weekend plan adapted to the mood and energy levels of the little ones: schedules, pace, what to bring on each outing, and realistic Plan B options if the day doesn’t go as planned. It includes recommendations for nearby beaches (Laredo, Berria) in case you need to change plans.
  • Plan B if it rains: tourist cave or museum
Alternative option if conditions don’t allow going outside. It's not an addition, it's a change of plan: if the weather forces us to, we’ll replace the day’s activity with one of these two alternatives, both accessible for the whole family.

Included

  • · Qualified local guide on every activity
  • · Full technical equipment (helmet with headlamp, life jacket)
  • · Activity insurance

Not included

  • · Meals not listed
  • · Transport to the valley
  • · External tickets (Cabárceno has its own ticket: we tell you how)

Who this fits

With friends Ecotourism Family
This package is designed for families with kids from age 5 who want an active nature weekend without driving long distances between activities. It fits well if you value a local guide who knows how to talk to children, if you prefer a country house with a large room to a hotel room, and if you like the idea of Saturday peaking with adventure and Sunday closing slowly with cave paintings and the coast. It is not the best fit if you travel with kids under 5 (the cave requires an hour of walking and so does the trail) or if you are looking for a beach holiday: the Cantabrian coast is 25 minutes away but this package is designed for inland life, not the sea. It is also a poor fit if you need maximum comfort of a 4-5 star hotel: the country houses in the valley are welcoming but homely. If any of this does not click, ask us: we have other Cantabria packages with an urban hotel base in Santander, more relaxed coastal getaways, or variants for younger kids. The first conversation is free and we steer you to the package that does fit.

Frequently asked

Got a question not listed here? Just ask.

What is the minimum age for kids?
Cueva El Caracol is designed for age 5 and up: it involves an hour of walking with narrow sections but no heights or technical gear. The Ajo estuary kayak (alternative) is open from age 6 with a parent in the same kayak. For younger kids we have other Cantabria packages with age-appropriate activities.
What if the kids do not want to enter the cave on Saturday?
You have two curated alternatives: a kayak tour of the Ajo estuary (from age 6, an hour and a half on the water) or a photographic beginner cave with the guide bringing extra lights. Decided the day before, with no extra cost.
Is there a large family room or do we have to sleep separately?
The country house in the valley has a family room with a double bed plus bunks for the kids, and a common room with fireplace and games. Not a hotel room but a spacious domestic space.
What happens if it rains?
The cave is weather-independent. The hike to the river source still runs in light rain unless there is serious flooding, with raincoats. If you prefer, it can be swapped for Cabárceno (partially covered park) or Covalanas moved to Saturday afternoon.
How do we get to the valley without a car?
There is a daily Alsa bus from Santander and Bilbao to Ramales de la Victoria (about one hour from either city). The country house is a 10-minute taxi ride from the centre of Ramales. We send up-to-date timetables and local taxi contacts when you confirm dates.
Can the package be customised?
Yes. The Saturday morning adventure has 2 alternatives (Ajo estuary kayak, photographic cave) and the Saturday afternoon has 2 (Cabárceno or Liencres pony). Flag it in the next step and we close it to fit, with no extra cost beyond any real rate difference.
What does the price include?
Two nights at the country house in a family room with breakfast, both guided activities with technical gear, and activity insurance. It does not include meals not listed, transport to the valley, or external tickets like Cabárceno (which has its own ticket: we tell you how to book it).
Do you run trips off-season (November-March)?
Yes, on request. The cave is operational year-round and the hike adjusts to the weather. Winter has its own rhythm: shorter days, country house with fireplace, perfect for families seeking quiet. Ask us about specific dates.
Does Cabárceno need a separate ticket?
Yes. Entry to Cabárceno Nature Park is booked online on the official site (varies by season, around 30 € adult and 19 € child). If you choose Cabárceno as an alternative, we send the link and help with the booking.
Are there places to sit on the river-source trail?
Yes. The route has several stone benches and logs along the way, and the final viewpoint has a rest area. The slope is gentle and the kids can stop whenever they want.
Is it suitable for a baby stroller?
Not entirely. The river-source trail has loose stones and roots that make stroller use awkward; we recommend a baby carrier for the youngest. For strollers, the Laredo seafront on Sunday is the better fit (fully accessible).
