Description

The Parrizal Gorge is a limestone canyon carved by the Matarraña River near Beceite (Teruel), in the Matarraña region. The vertical walls reach 60 metres high and at the narrowest point close to barely 1.5 metres apart, with the river flowing between them in a transparent emerald green.

The route starts from the Beceite car park along a 3 km trail (one way) following the Matarraña riverbed. The final stretch, inside the gorge itself, features wooden walkways bolted to the rock that allow you to advance over the water without getting wet — though in summer many visitors choose to wade directly through the river.

The Parrizal is the most spectacular stretch of the Matarraña River before it enters the Els Ports Natural Park. The combination of eroded limestone, crystal-clear water, riverside vegetation and the narrowness of the canyon makes it one of the most photogenic natural sites in Aragón.

Beceite is a charming stone village known for the Iberian ibex that inhabits the surrounding mountains and for its historic paper mills. A visit to the Parrizal combines well with the village and other spots in the region such as Valderrobres or Calaceite.
