Description

A walled medieval town on a rocky hilltop in inland Castellón, crowned by a 13th-century castle commanding the Maestrazgo region. Cobbled streets climb past stone mansions, Gothic porches and the Santa María la Mayor archpriestal basilica, a Valencian Gothic jewel with its helical spiral staircase and polychrome portals. Morella preserves 2 km of walls with 14 towers and 6 monumental gates. The medieval Sant Miquel aqueduct crosses the valley below. The Sexenni, a religious festival held every 6 years, fills streets with tapestries and processions. Inland gastronomy — winter black truffle, Maestrazgo lamb, artisan cheeses and flaons — makes every visit a sensory experience. Named one of Spain's most beautiful villages, Morella is the gateway to Maestrazgo routes, Levantine rock art caves (World Heritage) and the Tinença de Benifassà forests.
