Description

The Santoña, Victoria and Joyel Marshes Natural Park is one of the most important wetlands in Spain, listed as a RAMSAR zone and SPA (Special Protection Area for Birds). The Joyel section, in the municipality of Arnuero and Bareyo, is the westernmost and least crowded part.

Birdwatching excursions allow observation of spoonbills, night herons, egrets, waders, ducks and occasionally ospreys. In winter the park hosts thousands of ducks and coots. Local guides know the best spots: park hides, tidal channels and estuary shores. The activity includes binoculars and in some cases spotting scopes.
