Plans, activities and things to see in Pontevedra

Discover Pontevedra

Pontevedra is the provincial capital of the Rías Baixas and one of the north-western Iberian cities with the greatest presence of nautical activities in its immediate surroundings. The Pontevedra ría, with its calm and sheltered waters, is the natural setting for sea kayaking, canoeing and dinghy sailing, with easy access from the city centre. A few kilometres away, the Atlantic Islands Maritime-Terrestrial National Park groups the Cíes, Ons, Sálvora and Cortegada islands, reference destinations for open-sea kayaking and cliff hiking with white sand beaches. Towards the interior, the valleys and hills surrounding the city offer mountain biking and hiking routes through eucalyptus groves, oak woodlands and quiet river valleys. Montalvo beach and the Sanxenxo coast are the nearest points for surfing and windsurfing when Atlantic conditions allow. Horse-riding routes through the rural parishes of the Pontevedra interior and the Camino de Santiago routes converging on the city add an equestrian and cultural dimension to the active offer of the municipality.

Highlights

  • • Sea kayaking in the Pontevedra ría and excursions to the Ons Islands in the Atlantic National Park
  • • Hiking along the cliffs and beaches of the Galician Atlantic Islands
  • • Mountain biking and hiking in the Atlantic valleys and hills of the Pontevedra interior
  • • Surfing and windsurfing at Montalvo beach and the Rías Baixas coast

Best time to visit

May to September for nautical and coastal activities. Summer is the best time for sea kayaking but the Atlantic islands are busier. Spring and autumn offer the best conditions for mountain biking and hiking in the inland valleys.

Practical tips

Before kayaking to the islands, check the marine weather forecast: the Atlantic can change quickly. To visit the Cíes Islands, book your access quota months in advance. The Galician Atlantic water is cold even in summer: bring a wetsuit or suitable technical clothing.
