About Community of Madrid

The Community of Madrid offers 675 outdoor activities with a feature few European regions can match: 50 minutes' drive from the city centre, the Central System reaches 2,430 metres at Pico Peñalara, with high-mountain trails, cross-country ski routes and granite walls for year-round climbing. The Sierra de Guadarrama frames the mountain offer. The National Park, designated in 2013, protects 34,000 hectares where family hiking around Peñalara's glacial lakes, mountain biking on the forest tracks...

Highlights

  • • Climbing at La Pedriza, over 2,000 documented bouldering problems
  • • Snowshoe routes from Cercedilla and Rascafría in winter
  • • Hiking in Guadarrama National Park, Peñalara glacial lakes
  • • Kayaking and river descents on the Lozoya river and Pinilla reservoir
  • • Mountain biking on the forest tracks of Cotos and Navacerrada
  • • Hot-air balloon flights over the southern landscapes of the Community

Best time to visit

Spring (March–May) for hiking and climbing: 12–20°C, vegetation at its peak, no crowds. January–February for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing when there is snow. October–November for mountain biking in autumn colour. Summer is feasible at high altitude (Peñalara, Cuerda Larga) but July and August weekends push the national park to capacity.

Practical tips

Vehicle access to Guadarrama National Park has capacity controls in summer: Cotos and La Pedriza limit the number of cars. Arrive before 8:30am or take the Cercedilla-to-Cotos train (departs 9:05am on weekends). For climbing at La Pedriza, download the Community of Madrid digital topo before leaving: mobile coverage in the massif is patchy. Bring layers whatever the season; temperature drops 6–7°C per 1,000 metres of altitude compared to central Madrid.
