Discover Chiclana de la Frontera

Chiclana de la Frontera is a municipality in the province of Cádiz located on the southern edge of the Bay of Cádiz, on the eastern boundary of the Bay of Cádiz Natural Park. Its coastline, which includes the wide La Barrosa beach and the Sancti Petri channels and marshes, combines exceptional conditions for wind water sports with one of the most biodiverse areas of the Andalusian Atlantic coast. The Sancti Petri kitesurfing and windsurfing spot is one of the most recognised in southern Spain thanks to the regular levante and poniente winds in the area. Beyond wind and surf, Chiclana offers a diversified nature activity offer. Kayaking in the bay allows exploration of the marsh channels and estuaries, where coastal birdlife is extraordinary during migration periods. The Chiclana pine forest and the Natural Park tracks are ideal for hiking and mountain biking routes through fixed dunes, eucalyptus groves and Mediterranean scrubland. The proximity to Cádiz and access from Seville make Chiclana a natural base for visiting the southern side of the Bay of Cádiz.

Highlights

  • • Kitesurfing and windsurfing at Sancti Petri: one of the best wind spots on the Cádiz Atlantic coast
  • • Kayaking through the channels and estuaries of the Bay of Cádiz Natural Park among marshes and coastal birds

Best time to visit

Spring and autumn for kitesurfing with the levante and poniente winds respectively. Summer for surfing and kayaking when water temperatures are highest. Birdwatching in the marshes is best in winter and during the spring and autumn migration passages.

Practical tips

For kitesurfing, always choose schools certified by the Spanish federation: wind in the channels can be challenging for inexperienced practitioners. Before kayaking in the Natural Park, check access restrictions to nesting sectors. Sun on the Cádiz marshes is intense: high-factor sunscreen and a hat are essential.
