Discover Tarifa

Tarifa sits at the southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula, where the Strait of Gibraltar generates unmatched wind conditions in Europe for kitesurfing and windsurfing. The Poniente and Levante winds blow almost constantly for much of the year, making Tarifa the world capital of kitesurfing and a benchmark destination for windsurfing and surfing. Playa de Los Lances, with 7 km of sand, concentrates the majority of riders and specialist schools. Beyond the water, the Parque Natural de Los Alcornocales, the largest cork oak forest in the Iberian Peninsula, surrounds Tarifa to the north with a network of paths through humid ravines and riparian woodlands that offer ecosystems very different from those on the coast. Hiking and MTB in the park range from family-friendly forest track routes to multi-day traverses. Tarifa is also the most active base for cetacean watching in the Strait, with common dolphins, seasonal orcas and pilot whales visible from the water.

Highlights

  • • Kitesurfing and windsurfing at Los Lances, the world kitesurfing capital with near-constant wind
  • • Cetacean watching in the Strait: dolphins, orcas and pilot whales
  • • Hiking in the Parque Natural Los Alcornocales through ravines and humid woodlands
  • • Surfing and bodyboarding on Atlantic beaches at the southernmost tip of the peninsula

Best time to visit

Spring and autumn balance wind for water sports, pleasant temperatures for hiking and the peak cetacean migration season through the Strait.

Practical tips

The Levante wind can make swimming difficult in summer; use Poniente days for surfing and swimming, and save Levante days for kitesurfing.
