§02 — The place

Canyons, monasteries, and empanada under the river sun.

A weekend here means discovering one of Galicia’s lesser-known corners, boarding a catamaran that glides through 500-meter-high canyon walls, enjoying empanada at a village inn, stumbling upon a hidden Romanesque monastery nestled among chestnut trees, and returning home on Sunday with the feeling of having visited a place that wasn’t on your original plan. Rhythm: scenic views in the morning, long afternoons with dessert, a monastery visit at sunset.

§03 — Why it stands out

Why it stands out

  1. 01

Canyons to see, not to climb.

The Sil cuts through cliffs with 500 m drops. The landscape is what you come to see, not endure—perfect for a family.

  2. 02

Catamaran trip through the Sil Canyon

The star activity: 1h30 of sailing along walls of heroic vineyard. Suitable from age 0.

  3. 03

    Hidden rural Romanesque style

18 Romanesque monasteries within 25 km, many in remote villages. History with mystery that captivates the little ones.

  4. 04

    Rural houses designed for families.

With a pool, meadows, animals and long breakfasts. Real inland Galicia, without overcrowding.

§04 — Who it fits

Who it fits

Family History Local Life Relaxation Gastronomy
Especially well-suited for families with children aged 4 to 12, couples traveling with babies, and grandparents bringing grandchildren. If you're seeking intense adventure or demanding hiking, the Asón or the Picos might be better. And if you're a couple without children looking for real enotourism, there are more mature wine routes — just ask us, we’ll guide you.

Monastery of Santo Estevo of Ribas de Sil

The most imposing Romanesque-Baroque monastery in the Ribera Sacra, now a national parador hotel. Three cloisters (Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance), views of the canyon from the river balcony. 1h guided tour, suitable for children aged 6 and up.

San Pedro de Rocas (rock-cut monastery)

The oldest monastery in Galicia (6th century), literally carved into a rock. Three more rock churches plus an open-air necropolis. Small, fascinating, magical for children. It is secluded in the mountains and accessible by car.

Saint Christina of Ribas de Sil

Romanesque monastery hidden among centuries-old chestnut trees, right on the hillside of the canyon. Small but lovely, with a natural setting that looks like something out of a fairytale. Access via forest track (signposted).

Food & drink

Eating well without the manual - local product, village pace.

Featured

Galician empanada at an inn

The dish that brings the whole family together: bonito pie, zorza pie, octopus pie or scallop pie. In the inns of Ribera Sacra they make it in a wood oven, with thin pastry and generous filling. A shared dish at the table.

Wood-fired barbecue

Wood-fired roasted pork or beef ribs in village restaurants (Sober, Castro Caldelas, Doade). Local product, generous portion, easy to share with children. Enjoy with potatoes and Padrón peppers.

Arzúa Cheese + Local Honey

Local product (Arzúa is 1h from here but the cheese is sold throughout Galicia). Creamy D.O. Arzúa-Ulloa cheeses with local chestnut honey. The perfect dessert or snack to finish a meal.

Family tasting at heroic winery

Some wineries in the DO Ribeira Sacra organize grape juice or must tastings for the little ones while adults enjoy mencía and godello tastings. Visit the vineyard (the 30% slopes are spectacular) and finish in the tasting room with a board of cured meats.

Where to sleep

Where you sleep - inns, rural houses, hotels with character in the valley.

Featured

Rural house with swimming pool

The most typical option for a family. Restored stone houses (4-6 bedrooms), outdoor pool in summer, meadows, chickens and vegetable garden. They usually have a fully equipped kitchen if you want to cook some nights. Book in advance during the summer.

Stay in a winery cellar

Accommodation in a winery within the DO Ribeira Sacra: rooms with views of the heroic vineyards, breakfast with local products, wine tasting included for adults. More adult-friendly atmosphere (children are admitted but it is not kid-focused). For parents who want a mixed weekend.

Boutique hotel in a manor house

If you’re looking for more comfort: restored manor houses as boutique hotels with SPA, their own restaurant and attentive service. More expensive than rural houses but ideal for couples with one child who want a weekend with a bit of luxury. Family rooms available.

Nature

Landscape unfiltered: what you see on foot, without the car.

Vilouxe Viewpoint

One of the viewpoints with the best views of the Sil Canyon. Access by car with a short walk. Safe platform on the canyon wall, ideal for family photos at sunset.

Catamaran trip through the Sil Canyon

The star activity of the destination. 1h30 boat ride navigating between walls up to 500 m high, with heroic vineyards hanging on impossible slopes. Departures from Doade and Castro Caldelas. Suitable for all ages, from 0 years old. Always book in advance, especially in summer and holidays.

Cabezoás Viewpoint (Os Torgás)

The most spectacular balcony overlooking the canyon, known as 'the Great Canyon of Galicia'. 360° views, accessible by car plus a very short walk. To visit before or after the catamaran.

Canoeing on the Miño River (Belesar)

The calmer cousin of the Sil catamaran. Same format (1h30 sailing) but with less steep sides and fewer crowds. Ideal if you're going in August and can’t get a spot on the Sil. Departure from Belesar (Chantada).

Traditional boat ride

More intimate alternative to the catamaran: small boats (8-12 people) that travel short stretches of the Sil or Miño rivers with a local skipper who tells the story of the valley. Ask at the main viewpoints for daily departure times.

Mao River Walkways

Short trail (1.5 km linear) along wooden walkways over the Mao River, in the heart of Ribera Sacra. Accessible for families with children from 4-5 years old. Constant shade, the sound of water, and a restored mill at the end of the walk.

Trail to Castro Caldelas Castle

Gentle ascent (20 min walk) from the village to the medieval castle overlooking the Sil valley. Stunning views, the castle can be visited inside, and there are cafes with terraces at the bottom.

30-60 min away

Half-hour side trips if you've time left or it rains.

Lugo (Roman wall)

1 hour by car. The only Roman wall in the world that preserves its entire perimeter (2.2 km), a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You can walk along the top of the wall. Old town with taverns for enjoying octopus and peppers with a snack on a terrace.

Monforte de Lemos

30 min. Historic capital of the area, with the Colegio de Nuestra Señora de la Antigua (the 'Escorial Gallego') and a medieval castle with views. A good stop for a snack on a terrace on Sundays when other towns are closed.

Allariz (medieval town center)

1 hr. Thoroughly restored historic center from the 90s, European urbanism award. Arnoia River running through the town, Lazo Park with animals and walks, Casa Allariz chocolate factory. Ideal for a morning with children.

More practical details

Physical level & requirements

Very basic physical fitness required. Short trails, car-accessible viewpoints, and effortless catamaran rides. Suitable for babies (strollers available at main viewpoints) up to teenagers.

How to get there

Best time: May to October. September and October are spectacular visually and gastronomically, thanks to the grape harvest. In winter, the canyons have their own charm, but it’s cold. You’ll need your own car — the area is spread across the provinces of Lugo and Ourense, and public transport is very limited. Reserve the catamaran in advance, especially in summer and on holidays.

Recommendations

Combine two nights in the Ribera Sacra with a day in Lugo (Roman walls, UNESCO site) or Allariz (medieval old town). Try a family wine tasting: kids enjoy grape juice, adults sample DO Ribeira Sacra wines. And book your dinner table in advance — don’t improvise.
§07 — Questions

Frequently asked questions

Is it suitable for babies?

Yes. The catamaran accommodates strollers, and the main viewpoints are accessible by car. Rural houses often provide cots and high chairs — just ask when booking.

Do I need a car?

Yes. The Ribera Sacra is a scattered region between the provinces of Lugo and Ourense, and public transport is very limited. You’ll need your own car or rent one at Santiago airport.

Which is better: the Sil River catamaran or the Miño River?

The Sil River (Doade, Ribas de Sil) offers more dramatic vertical walls. The Miño (Belesar) is calmer and usually has shorter lines. If you can only do one, go for the Sil.

Are wine tastings boring with kids?

Some wineries offer family-friendly tastings with grape juice or must for children, while adults enjoy the wine. Ask in advance — not all wineries are equipped for kids.
