Description

Santona is the canning capital of the Cantabrian Sea, a fishing town on a bay sheltered by Monte Buciero. Its salt-cured anchovies, handcrafted for over a century, hold a quality denomination and are exported worldwide.

Monte Buciero, closing the bay to the east, houses a system of Napoleonic fortifications (Fort Napoleon, Fort San Martin, Fort San Carlos) built during the Peninsular War. The perimeter trail circles cliffs, holm oak forests and bunkers with Cantabrian Sea views.

South of town stretch the Santona, Victoria and Joyel Marshlands, one of northern Spain's most important wetlands: 6,907 hectares of marsh, estuary and beach serving as a refuge for migratory birds and breeding ground for numerous species. Playa de Berria at the foot of the hill completes the landscape.
