Description

Puentedey is a village of barely 50 inhabitants in the Merindades of Burgos, built on a natural rock bridge 15 metres high that the River Nela has carved over millennia. The village literally sits on the stone arch, with houses peering over the edge — a geological and urban phenomenon unique in Spain.

The name says it all: "Bridge of God". The natural arch, spanning 34 metres, is visible from below along the Nela riverbed. Above, the village preserves the Romanesque church of San Pelayo (12th century), stone houses and a tiny square.

Puentedey is in the Merindades district, a little-known but spectacular area of northern Burgos: waterfalls, canyons, beech forests and medieval villages. It combines with Ojo Guareña (25 km) and Orbaneja del Castillo (40 km).
