Description

Cebolleros Castle (or Castle of the Caves) is a singular work in the Burgos Merindades: a castle built by hand by a single person, Serafín Villarán, over more than 20 years using stones from the surroundings. No architects, no plans, no machinery — just will and patience.

The result is a fairy-tale fortress with towers, battlements, stairs and rooms reminiscent of a medieval castle but entirely contemporary. It stands near the village of Cebolleros, in a countryside and mountain setting.

The visit is exterior (private property) but you can walk around and appreciate it from outside. A unique example of contemporary vernacular architecture — or constructive obsession turned into art.
