Description

Montrondo Gorge, in the Valdeburón district of León, is one of the most popular and accessible canyons in northern Spain. The route combines abseils, natural waterslides, water jumps and turquoise pools, all surrounded by the spectacular landscape of the Eastern Leonese Mountains.

The route is suitable for people with no prior experience. A specialist guide will kit you out with a wetsuit, helmet, harness and technical gear, and teach you basic abseiling and canyon-progression techniques before you begin the descent. The difficulty is moderate: there are optional jumps at different heights for the more adventurous and easier alternatives for those who prefer a gentler pace.

The canyon runs through a narrow limestone gorge, with waterfalls, natural pools and stretches wading along the riverbed that make this descent a refreshing and unforgettable experience. The excursion lasts 3-4 hours including transfer to the start point, gearing up and the full route. Montrondo is just a few kilometres from Riaño Reservoir, making it easy to combine both activities in one day.
