What you'll experience

Campos de Hernán Perea (13 km)

Breakfast and transfer to the trailhead. Thirteen kilometres of medium difficulty across Campos de Hernán Perea, a plateau above 1,500m where the sky rules. Picnic lunch en route. Arrival at the rural hostel in Pontones in the afternoon, home-cooked dinner by the fireplace, rest.
From the source of the Segura to Coto Ríos (24 km)

Early breakfast at the hostel. Demanding 24 km traverse from the source of the Segura river, past Juan León viewpoint and the Aguasmulas river, to Coto Ríos. Optional lunch at a restaurant in Llanos de Arance around 3pm. Return in the afternoon.

Lodging

Rural hostel in Pontones · one night

Rural-style hostel in Pontones with bunk rooms, shared bathrooms, kitchen and dining room with fireplace. Functional and warm, designed for hiking groups.

Transfers

Internal route transfers

Transfers between route points (access to day 1 trailhead, transfer to hostel, day 2 start). Does not include transport to the meeting point: own or rental car is the most practical.

Meals

Meals: 2 breakfasts, home-cooked dinner and trail lunch

Saturday breakfast before starting, picnic lunch en route on day 1, home-cooked dinner at Pontones hostel and Sunday breakfast. Sunday lunch is on you (Llanos de Arance).

Qualified mountain guide with deep knowledge of Sierra de Segura. Accompanies the group both days, sets the pace, reads the terrain and knows the name of every hill and stream.
Free visit to Segura de la Sierra

If you arrive Friday afternoon or have time on the return, Segura de la Sierra is one of the prettiest villages in Jaén: Arab castle, Arab baths, medieval main square. Twenty minutes by car from Pontones.

Who this fits

Fits if you hike regularly and aren't put off by a 24 km day with elevation. Doesn't fit if you want a relaxed getaway, if you bring small children, or if you expect boutique hotels: the Pontones hostel is functional, not charming. Nor if you're in a hurry: day two is long and the group sets the pace.

What fitness level do I need?

Medium-high. Day 1 is 13 km accessible to regular hikers; day 2 is 24 km and that requires trained legs. If you don't hike regularly, start with a single-day outing.

Can I go with children?

Not the right trip for under-12s. Day 2 is six to seven hours of walking with elevation. For families, check other options in the hub.

What if it rains?

Activity proceeds unless official adverse warning. The range changes with rain: waterproof gear mandatory. If closure due to snow or flooding, the guide proposes an alternative or new date.

Is there mobile coverage on the route?

Patchy. Reasonable in Pontones; very patchy in Hernán Perea and none on parts of day 2. Let people know before you head out.

What is the hostel like?

Rural, functional. Shared bunk rooms, common bathrooms, kitchen and dining room with fireplace. Not a boutique hotel; practical and warm.
