At a glance
  • Riding through the dehesa of Sierra de Andújar Natural Park
  • Iberian lynx country —largest wild population on Earth
  • Calm Andalusian horse, suitable for beginners
  • Jaén-style dinner at a rural country house
  • Real silence: no engines, no nearby villages

What you'll experience

  1. First ride and night in the mountains

Arrival at the meeting point mid-morning, horse presentation and safety briefing. Departure on a trail ride through the pastureland for 1.5-2 hours, with stops for wildlife observation and rest. Return to base, transfer to rural accommodation, free time and dinner featuring Jaén cuisine (andrajos, game meat, local extra virgin olive oil).

  2. Another side of the holm oak forest

Early breakfast at the accommodation. Transfer to the equestrian center and second ride through another sector of the park, with different scenery and views: better light for photography, higher chance of crossing groups of deer. One and a half to two hours on horseback, return to base and end of the program around noon.

Who this fits

With friends Adventure Ecotourism Local Life Relaxation
A fit if you've never ridden a horse or have only done it a couple of times: rides are 1.5-2 h, the horses are calm and the guide walks alongside the group. A fit if you want to sleep far from any noise and eat honest Jaén cuisine. Not a fit if you're after trotting and cantering: this is walking pace. Not a fit either if you expect to see the lynx on cue —the animal is here, but spotting one in the wild needs luck and an early start.

Frequently asked

Got a question not listed here? Just ask.

Do I need to know how to ride?
No. The Andalusian horses are calm, selected for beginners, and rides are at walking pace. The guide walks with the group and gives basic instructions before setting off.
Will I see a lynx?
Honestly, no guarantees. Sierra de Andújar is the spot on Earth with the highest odds, but the lynx is elusive. You'll see dehesa, deer, wild boar, vultures; with patience and an early start, some people do spot one.
When is the best time?
October to May. In July and August the dehesa tops 35 °C / 95 °F and the activity stops making sense. The Virgen de la Cabeza pilgrimage (last weekend of April) fills the area: book well ahead or avoid those dates.
Can kids come?
From around 12 years old, depending on weight and height. For younger ones, ask —some centres offer short guided pony walks.
What kind of lodging is it?
Country house or guest house near the park, standard double room. Not a boutique hotel: honest, clean, well placed to come back from the ride and have dinner without moving the car again.
