Arrival, the Mudéjar old town and tasting-menu dinner

Arrive in Mondéjar in the afternoon and check in, where a small bottle of cava and chocolates await. Free afternoon around the old town: the main square, the Mudéjar church of Santa María Magdalena and the remains of the San Antonio convent. In the evening, a tasting-menu dinner at the hotel restaurant: two starters, a main course of meat or fish and dessert, with wine and water included.
Breakfast and the option to extend

Buffet breakfast and departure, or a second night if you chose the two-night version. Ways to extend: kayaking on the Buendía reservoir, 25 minutes away; the lavender fields of Brihuega in July, half an hour away; or the Cela literary route through Pareja and Trillo.

The area

Mondéjar is a 2,500-inhabitant town in the heart of the Guadalajara Alcarria. Compact centre with main square, the 15th-century Mudéjar Santa María Magdalena parish church and remains of the San Antonio convent. Red clay-limestone soils and a mild Mediterranean microclimate at 700 m elevation.

By car: A-2 towards Zaragoza to Guadalajara (exit 50, 40 min from Madrid). N-320 towards Cuenca for 25 min to Mondéjar. Free parking in the village.

By train: AVE Madrid-Guadalajara (28 min) or commuter line. Then taxi to Mondéjar (~€35) or rental car.

By bus: ALSA Madrid-Mondéjar direct (1h30, ~€12). Several departures per day.

What does the getaway include?

Yes, there is a direct ALSA bus from Madrid to Mondéjar. But a car is strongly recommended for the reservoirs or Brihuega.

What is Mondéjar wine like?

Tempranillo and Cabernet reds, fresher and lighter-bodied than a Ribera, and a very aromatic local white from Malvar. Good value.
