What you'll experience

Salinas, neoprene, first foam

You arrive, settle into the apartment, go to school. The first class is an introduction, theory on sand and half an hour in the foam to lose your fear. In the afternoon, a stroll along the promenade and dinner at a cider house in town.
Paddling well is 80% of surfing.

Two hours focused on positioning on the board, paddling technique and how to catch the foam. Still in shallow waters. Free afternoon: option to climb La Peñona to see the Surf Memorial with the bust that Salinas dedicated to Cousteau.
First takeoff: getting up on the board

The key day. You practice the takeoff in sand until it’s automatic, then to the water. Most get up on foam this day; some wait until fourth period. Afternoon: Avilés is a 10-minute drive, walk around the historic center and the Niemeyer Center.
More takeoffs, first green waves.

Repeat and repeat. If the group is ready, the instructor takes them outside for the first unbroken waves. Sore body but bouncing back. Free afternoon: either you stay in the water on your own with a rented board, or you hit the beach and take a nap.
Last session, take stock.

Final class with video analysis if the instructor offers it. Farewell at the school. Check-out of the apartment is usually at noon: either you stay another night on your own, or you head home with the first opportunity to present your CV.

Lodging

4 nights in apartment or apart-hotel in Salinas

Apartment or apart-hotel within 5-15 minutes' walk of the beach. Twin or double room by default; private room available on request without shared-room surcharge (base pack price).

Activities

5-day surf course (2h/day) with board and wetsuit
Five days of 2-hour classes with a certified instructor and groups of max 8 students. Soft-top board, wetsuit (3/2 or 4/3 depending on season) and insurance included. Morning or afternoon slot depending on tide.

Travel to Salinas is on you. Asturias Airport (OVD) is 15 min by car, Avilés train station is 5 km away. If you drive, free parking is available on the promenade.

Meals

Meals not included: eat in the village

Salinas and Avilés have sidrerías, chigres and restaurants with set menu from €13-15. Budget €20-25 per day per person to eat well. Supermarket available if the apartment has a kitchen.

Board and wetsuit outside class (optional)

Board and wetsuit rental outside class hours to practice on your own in the afternoon (not included in the base pack, ~€15-20/day at the school).
Free afternoon: village, sidrería, Surf Memorial

Every afternoon is free. Suggestions: seafront walk, climb La Peñona to see the Cousteau bust, visit Avilés (10 min by car), Cabo Peñas (20 min). If your body holds up, free session with a rented board.

This fits you if: you've never surfed or only taken a couple of classes, you're 14+, you swim 50 m comfortably and accept you'll swallow water the first morning. Solo, couple or with friends: the group forms in class.

Not for you if: you want intermediate progression (already paddle and pop up solo), you need guaranteed big waves (Salinas is a school spot, not a serious break), you want full board (no meals included, you eat in the village) or you'd rather a relaxed getaway: two hours daily in the water are more tiring than they look.

Do I need to know how to swim?

Yes, you must swim at least 50 metres comfortably in open water. You don't need to be a swimmer, but you do need to be comfortable in the sea and stay afloat waiting for a wave.

What if I've never been on a board?

Perfect, that's exactly what this format is for. You start on sand with theory and simulation, then in the water on a soft-top board (the most stable). By day three or four most people stand up in whitewater.

What if it rains or the sea is bad?

Light rain: class goes ahead (you're already wet). Big swell or storm: the school cancels that day and makes it up at the end of the week, or refunds the proportional part if not possible.

Can I come alone?

Yes, most people come solo or with a friend. The class group forms at the school; by day two the vibe is good.

Is the accommodation shared?

No: you stay in an apartment or apart-hotel near the beach, not in a collective house. Solo travellers get a private apartment, or shared if you prefer (tell us when booking).

Are meals included?

No, meals are not included. You eat out in the village: there are sidrerías, chigres and affordable restaurants (set menu ~€13-15).
