Context
Caving at the Lamiñetako Caves takes place in a subterranean system located between Lekeitio and Berriatua in Bizkaia. This area is known for its striking geological features such as stalactites and stalagmites, and features a dramatic five-meter deep entrance known as a 'simá'—a vertical shaft that leads into the cave’s network of tunnels. The journey winds through a remote rural landscape where the wind carries scents of thyme and damp earth.
The Experience
Over 3–4 hours, you descend into the shaft using technical gear and progress through tight passages, navigating climbs and low crawls. Constant cool temperatures and the echo of underground water accompany your journey. Your expert guide shares insights into the geology of the caves and tells local legends about the lamias—mythical female spirits from Basque folklore believed to inhabit these deep, hidden spaces.
