About Albacete

Albacete combines the wide Manchegan plateau with a mountain range that gives rise to rivers. To the south, the Sierra de Alcaraz reaches 1,800 metres and shelters the headwaters of the Mundo and Júcar rivers, reachable by hiking routes through beech and pine forest. Highlights

  • • Source of the Mundo river: waterfall from a cave at 1,700 m
  • • Lagunas de Ruidera: kayak across fifteen connected lakes
  • • Rock climbing in Alcalá del Júcar gorge on limestone
  • • Vía Verde del Valle de Alcudia: 46 km on a former mining railway
  • • Hiking through beech forests in the Sierra de Alcaraz up to 1,800 m

Best time to visit

Spring (April–June) and autumn (September–October) offer the best balance: temperatures between 15 and 25 °C, without the August storms or winter cold in the sierra. Lagunas de Ruidera show their best colour in May.

Practical tips

For the Mundo river source, set out early in summer: the car park fills up before 10:00. At Lagunas de Ruidera, kayaking is restricted in some natural park zones; check the boundaries before launching. The Alcalá del Júcar climbing sector is accessed from the village itself; bring at least a 60 m rope for the longer routes.
