§02 — The place

Under the stone, another world awaits you.

The Mountains of Palencia hold an underground world that almost no one sees. Beneath the limestone plateaus of the Las Loras Geopark, galleries, shafts and halls open up where silence is absolute and the rock tells millions of years of history. You don’t come here for cave tourism: you come to learn how to move through them, to trust a rope and your companions, and to leave changed from when you entered.

§03 — Why it stands out

Why it stands out

  1. 01

A geopark, not a tourist cave.

Las Loras is the first UNESCO Geopark in Castilla y León. You work in a top-level karst territory, not on a guided tour path.

  2. 02

    Training you take with you.

It’s not just going into a cave and coming back: you learn progression technique, rope use and cave reading skills that are useful for future excursions.

  3. 03

    All year round underground

The cave maintains a stable temperature, so the outside cold or heat matters little. Spring, summer and autumn work just as well.

  4. 04

    Small groups with qualified instructors.

Adjusted ratio to ensure each person has real-time vertical practice and individual attention on delicate steps.

§04 — Who it fits

Who it fits

With friends Adventure Ecotourism Disconnection
This is for you if the idea of moving underground appeals to you and you don’t mind getting dirty, crouching down, and going through narrow places. No prior experience is necessary, but you do need to be willing to exert yourself physically and manage darkness and enclosed spaces. If claustrophobia affects you or you’re looking for a comfortable, low-effort plan, this isn't the trip for you.

Physical level & requirements

Moderate physical condition required. This involves walking to the cave entrance, bending over, crawling through galleries and progressing with ropes vertically. Not suitable if you have serious mobility issues or unmanageable claustrophobia.

How to get there

When: year-round; the caves maintain a stable interior temperature, so the outside season barely affects the activity.

Physical condition: a moderate level of fitness is required. There are crouches, crawls and rope progression which can be tiring.

Equipment: the organization provides the technical vertical progression equipment. It is advisable to wear clothes that can get dirty and mountain footwear.

Level: introductory formats are available; no prior experience is required.

Recommendations

Bring old clothes you don’t mind getting dirty and a complete change of clothes for afterward. Stay well hydrated before each entry and always respect the guide’s instructions on vertical sections. If it's your first cave, let us know if you have any concerns about enclosed spaces: it’s best to discuss them beforehand.

§08 — Questions

Frequently asked questions

Do I need prior caving experience?

Not for beginner formats. You start with the basics and progress in a guided way with certified instructors.

Is it safe?

Caving involves risks that are controlled with technique, certified equipment and guides. We always work with accident and liability insurance.

What if I’m claustrophobic?

There are narrow and dark sections. If you are severely claustrophobic, this isn't the ideal activity; let us know beforehand so we can assess less demanding options.

What should I wear?

Clothes that can get dirty and mountain footwear. The technical equipment (harness, helmet, progression system) is provided by the organization.

Can it be done in winter?

Yes. The cave maintains a stable temperature throughout the year, so the outside cold does not prevent activity.
