Description

The Señorío de Bertiz Natural Park is an Atlantic forest spanning over 2,000 hectares in the Baztán Valley, in the Navarrese Pyrenees. Its jewel is the Historic-Artistic Garden, a century-old romantic botanical garden with over 120 species from around the world: sequoias, cedars of Lebanon, ginkgos, camellias, azaleas and bamboos coexist beneath the canopy of native beech and oak trees.

The park was owned by Pedro Ciga and Dorotea Fernández, who in the late 19th century banned logging and created the botanical garden. In 1949, Pedro Ciga bequeathed the estate to the Government of Navarra on condition it be preserved as a space for nature and culture. In 1984 it was declared a Natural Park, the first in Navarra.

Seven waymarked trails run through the forest, from short accessible walks to mountain routes. The Suspiro Route is the most popular, a gentle walk through ancient beech trees. The Aizkolegi Route climbs to viewpoints overlooking the valley. The Nature Interpretation Centre explains the Atlantic forest ecosystems.

The park is a refuge for Pyrenean wildlife: the middle spotted woodpecker, European mink and several bat species find their habitat here. The combination of exotic garden and wild forest makes it a unique experience in northern Spain.
