Urdax Caves

The Urdazubi/Urdax Caves are a series of karstic cavities located in the Urtxuma River valley in Navarra, very close to the French border. These caves were formed over thousands of years by the erosive action of water on limestone rock, creating an underground landscape of galleries and chambers that reflect the natural dynamics of water beneath the surface. The interior temperature remains cool and constant, around 12 ºC, inviting a calm and comfortable exploration.

During the visit, you can observe various geological formations such as stalactites, stalagmites, and columns, all highlighted by soft lighting that allows you to appreciate their details without disturbing the natural atmosphere. Additionally, outside stands a restored medieval mill next to the caves, offering insight into the traditional use of water in the area. The surrounding landscape is lush and green, typical of the Navarrese Pyrenees, with sounds of water and birds accompanying the experience.

These caves hold significant historical and cultural value, having been known and used since ancient times, possibly as a refuge or place of worship. The nearby medieval mill testifies to the traditional hydraulic use in the region, reflecting the relationship between the local community and the natural environment. The area is part of a rural landscape that preserves traditions and architecture typical of the western Pyrenees.

To visit the caves, it is advisable to book in advance, as guided tours are conducted in small groups to preserve the space. The approximate duration of the visit is one hour. Access is of medium difficulty, with adapted paths but some areas with steps. Entry has a moderate cost and visits with children accompanied by adults are allowed. Pets are not permitted. It is recommended to wear comfortable footwear and clothing suitable for a consistently cool temperature.
