Description

An islet connected to the Bermeo coast by a stone bridge and 241 steps ascending to the San Juan hermitage atop the rock. One of the most spectacular Cantabrian landscapes and filming location for Dragonstone in Game of Thrones. Legend says each visitor must ring the hermitage bell three times and make a wish. Summit views span the entire Biscayan coast.

Visitor Tips

Online booking required in summer (June-September). 45 min climb from parking. Wear closed shoes — steps are slippery when wet. Best at dawn or sunset to avoid crowds and catch the light. Bar at parking but nothing at the top.

Historical Facts

Hermitage dedicated to St John the Baptist, documented since the 10th century. The Templars used it as a coastal watchtower. In 1593 Francis Drake attempted to take it unsuccessfully. In 2016-2017 it served as the Dragonstone location in HBO's Game of Thrones.
