Description

The Monte Cabezon Sequoia Forest is the only coast redwood grove (Sequoia sempervirens) in Spain and one of the few in Europe. Declared a Natural Monument, it houses 848 specimens planted in 1940 as an experimental forestry plantation that now reach an average height of 36 metres, with the tallest exceeding 40 metres.

The forest covers 2.5 hectares on the slopes of Monte Cabezon and is explored via a waymarked path winding between the reddish trunks. Light filtering through the sequoia canopy creates an atmosphere reminiscent of the forests of the US West Coast, their original habitat.

The visit is free and can be combined with the nearby Cantabria Nature Museum in Carrejo and a route through the Cabuerniga Valley.
