Description

The Cantabria Nature Museum occupies the Palacio de Ygareda, an 18th-century manor house declared a Cultural Heritage Site in 1984, in the village of Carrejo. Since 1990, its three floors and a botanical garden recreate Cantabria's five main ecosystems: coast, mountain, valley, forest and wetland.

The permanent collection combines fauna specimens (taxidermy), geology, botany and interactive panels explaining Cantabrian biodiversity. The palace's former chapel houses temporary exhibitions and audiovisual screenings.

The museum grounds, with their garden of native species and valley views, are themselves an introduction to the landscape that the interior galleries describe in detail.
