About Mycology

Recreational mycology — going into the countryside to search for mushrooms — is one of the most deeply rooted autumn traditions in Spain. Guided mycology trails allow you to enjoy this activity safely and educatively, learning to identify edible species, distinguish them from toxic ones, and understand the ecosystems where they grow. An expert mycologist accompanies the group through beech, oak, chestnut, or pine forests, teaching search techniques, on-site identification, and best practices for collection. The days typically include a practical field session followed by a classification workshop to review the species found. The main mushroom season in Spain runs from October to December, with a smaller second season in spring (March to May), depending on the region. The most renowned destinations for mycology include Soria, Burgos, Navarra, the Basque Country, La Rioja, Catalonia (Berguedà, Solsonès), and the Sierra de Gredos and Sierra de Cazorla. Many mycology trails are combined with gastronomy: after the collection, a meal is prepared using the mushrooms found. There are also mycogastromic days at restaurants and rural accommodations featuring tasting menus with seasonal mushrooms.
