Where it happens Wakeboarding on the south coast of Tenerife happens in open sea, not on a lake or a cable park. You set out from Puerto Colón Marina in Costa Adeje, and the water sits around 20 ºC for much of the year, so it works in any season.

The experience A boat pulls you along while you hold the rope with your feet strapped to the board. The hard part is the start: getting out of the water with the board on edge and finding your balance in those first seconds. After that it is about holding the position and learning to cross the wake. You go out with an instructor who talks you through it from the starting position, so there is no need to have ridden before.

Two lengths There is a 15-minute session and a 30-minute one. The short one is for trying the feeling; the half hour is what gives you room to fall a few times, correct and end up riding properly, which is where the real difference between them lies.

Who can ride Minimum age is 12, and minors need an adult's authorisation. You need to be able to swim and comfortable in the water. It is not advisable for anyone with back or shoulder problems, as the pull of the start loads those areas.

What to bring Swimwear, a towel and sunscreen. The technical kit — board, life jacket and helmet — is included. Anyone with you can ride along on the boat as a spectator if there is space.

About the Area

The activity departs from Puerto Colón Marina in Costa Adeje, one of the busiest watersports harbours on the south coast of Tenerife. There is parking next to the marina and the bus stop is a few minutes away on foot. The quayside itself has bars and restaurants for before or after your session. Whale and dolphin watching trips head out from the same harbour towards the Teno-Rasca marine strip, and Fañabé and El Duque beaches are minutes away. Inland, Barranco del Infierno offers a hiking route that must be booked in advance, and Teide is just over an hour away by car.
