Discover Adeje

Adeje is a municipality in south-west Tenerife that is home to two of the most intense natural experiences in the Canary Islands: the Los Gigantes cliffs, vertical walls of more than 600 metres that drop straight into the Atlantic, and the Barranco del Infierno, one of the most visited hiking trails on the islands, ending at a waterfall. Kayaking beneath the Los Gigantes cliffs allows you to admire these rock formations from the water in a perspective that has no equal in the archipelago. Cetacean watching is another hallmark of Adeje: the waters of the channel between Tenerife and La Gomera harbour resident populations of pilot whales and dolphins that can be observed year-round from licensed vessels. The marine biodiversity of the protected area also favours recreational diving. Mountain bike routes on the southern slopes of Teide set off from the municipality towards higher elevations, offering descents with ocean views across a dramatically contrasting volcanic landscape.

Highlights

  • • Kayaking beneath the Los Gigantes cliffs, walls of more than 600 metres
  • • Pilot whale and dolphin watching in the Tenerife–La Gomera channel
  • • Hiking the Barranco del Infierno trail to the interior waterfall
  • • Mountain biking on the volcanic slopes south of Teide with ocean descents

Best time to visit

Adeje has pleasant weather year-round. Winter is the best time for cetacean watching and Barranco del Infierno hiking with fewer visitors. April to June is ideal for mountain biking and kayaking before the summer heat.

Practical tips

For kayaking beneath Los Gigantes, choose a company departing from Los Gigantes harbour to minimise time on the water. For the Barranco del Infierno, wear sturdy trekking shoes as the trail has wet and slippery sections near the waterfall.
