What is a via ferrata
A via ferrata is a secured climbing route with rock anchors, iron rungs (pitons) and handrails bolted into the rockface. It allows people to climb vertical walls without prior experience, following a marked route with specific safety equipment.
The activity
The guide explains how to use the harness and energy-absorbing lanyards before starting. During the route, participants move clipped onto the safety cable, overcoming rock steps, handrails and sections of real vertical exposure. The sensation of climbing at height with complete safety is unlike anything else.
Who can do it
Minimum age 10 for introductory routes. No severe vertigo and basic physical fitness required. No prior climbing or via ferrata experience needed. The guide adapts the pace and demands to the group.
The area
The via ferratas in the programme are located in protected natural settings in northern Spain: limestone walls, gorges and massifs with spectacular views.
