Context
The Carboneras Fault is an active geological structure located within the Natural Park Cabo de Gata-Níjar, in Almería. This fault has directly influenced the region's volcanic activity, shaping a semi-arid landscape marked by volcanic formations and old mining remains. The trail gently ascends about 200 meters over 10 kilometers, offering close-up views of ongoing seismic and geological processes still visible today.
The Experience
During this 8-hour guided hike, you’ll walk along natural trails and volcanic rock zones while a geologist explains the formation and dynamics of the fault. The wind carries scents of dry earth and thyme, and you can touch the rough texture of volcanic rock and old mining debris. The route includes stops at Mesa de Roldán for panoramic views of the Mediterranean Sea and at Playa de los Muertos, where rock formations merge with crystal-clear waters.
Who It’s For
This activity is ideal for those interested in geology and nature, as well as hikers with little experience seeking a low-difficulty route. Not recommended for people with limited mobility or those unable to walk for 8 hours, nor for visitors seeking abundant shade in summer.
Local Context
Carboneras preserves a deep-rooted tradition of mining and volcanism reflected in its landscape and cultural heritage. Locals value the conservation of the natural park and appreciate scientific interpretation that connects visitors to the living geological history of the territory.
