Description

The Flooded Villages Trail follows the shoreline of Riaño reservoir in memory of the eight communities submerged in 1987 when the dam gates were closed: Riaño, Anciles, Burón, Huelde, Éscaro, Pedrosa del Rey, Salio and Garande. The itinerary combines sections of the Paseo del Recuerdo with shoreline paths, and in drought conditions ruins and structures of the former villages may emerge from the water. Information panels, historical photographs and testimonies from former residents tell a story of uprooting and rebirth that remains very much alive in the collective memory of the area. The route is flexible: it can be done in 1 hour covering only the Paseo del Recuerdo, or extended to a 4–5 km loop around part of the reservoir.
