Description

Hiking through the Beyos Gorge is one of the most unique experiences in the Cantabrian Mountains: 10 kilometres of walking through a limestone canyon where the Sella River has carved walls up to 700 metres high. The route largely follows the GR-202, which traces the ancient transhumance path used for centuries by shepherds moving their flocks between the National Park's high pastures and winter valleys. The trail runs alongside the Sella riverbed, crossing at several points via walkways and stone bridges, with side waterfalls and spectacular geological formations throughout. In the calmer pools it is possible to see salmonid trout swimming. The route can be done point-to-point (Oseja de Sajambre to Besande in Asturias, 10km) or in shorter sections entering the gorge and returning.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. The GR-202 is marked with the characteristic white and red stripes of long-distance trails. Carrying a map is recommended.
The full 10km route (Oseja-Besande) takes 3 to 4 hours. Shorter sections (5km one-way) can be done in 1.5-2 hours.
The first 3-4km from Oseja is flat and easy, suitable for children. The more technical sections require care on the bridges.
If doing the full point-to-point route, you need to arrange transport from Besande. Many hikers return on the CL-626 road (4km) or do it as an out-and-back.
With caution: the gorge can have ice on bridges and waterfalls may be in flood. Check conditions before going.
