Discover Valladolid

Valladolid has no mountains but it has the Canal de Castilla: 224 km of navigable 18th-century canal with 49 working locks, a network of converted towpaths turned into cycling routes linking Medina de Rioseco with Alar del Rey through cereal fields and poplar groves. The stretch from Valladolid city to Medina de Rioseco (55 km) is the most popular and allows combining cycling with visits to restored flour mills. The Tierra de Pinares district to the south-east offers cycling routes between resin pine forests with the scent of turpentine in summer. On the Cerrato plateau, the great bustard is the emblematic bird: the Los Oteros and Los Páramos ZEPA observation points concentrate steppe bird groups between February and April during their courtship display. The Pisuerga stretch between Valladolid and Simancas is the most accessible for kayaking without technical skill: gentle current, tree-lined banks and several put-in points.
