What to do in Soria

Soria is Spain's least populated provincial capital, surrounded by a largely uncrowded natural environment. The Picos de Urbión to the north shelter Laguna Negra, a Quaternary glacial cirque at 1,753 metres that serves as the starting point for routes through native pine forests and high-altitude grasslands. The Río Lobos Canyon Natural Park offers one of the most celebrated hiking trails in the interior of the peninsula: twelve kilometres of limestone walls with griffon vultures permanently circling the gorge. The dehesas and extensive pine forests of the province provide an ideal network of tracks for long-distance mountain biking. From the capital, the Altos de Barahona are less than an hour away, with horse-riding routes across semi-arid plateaux and wild lavender fields. The Celtiberian-Roman site of Numantia, on the outskirts of the city itself, adds a cultural dimension to nature escapes. Soria's nights rank among the clearest in Castile, making it a growing destination for astronomical observation.
