About Álava

Álava packs three distinct landscapes into fewer than 3,000 km²: the Gorbeia massif rising to 1,482 metres with beech forests wrapped in morning mist, the Álava plain crossed by ancient drove roads, and the wine-growing south of Rioja Alavesa. The GR-282 traverses Gorbeia Natural Park from north to south; in spring the muddy beechwood gives way to open meadows with views towards the Cantabrian Sea and, on clear days, the Pyrenees. Rioja Alavesa blends cycling routes through vineyards with visit...

Highlights

  • • GR-282 through Gorbeia beech forest and summits (1,482m)
  • • Cycling routes between wineries in Rioja Alavesa
  • • Medieval Laguardia: 12th-century cellars beneath its streets
  • • Via Verde del Plazaola, a converted railway greenway
  • • Salinas de Añana: active salt terraces 6,000 years old

Best time to visit

May–June for green beech forest and dry trails. September–October for harvest in Rioja Alavesa and autumn colour in Gorbeia. Avoid July–August in the southern wine zone due to heat.

Practical tips

Vitoria-Gasteiz has an urban cycle network and e-bike rental: useful as a base for the vineyards 60 km south. For Gorbeia, park at Murua or Sarría and take the marked trails uphill. In winter the summit can be snow-covered; check conditions with the natural park before setting out.
