What you'll experience

Arrival and briefing

Check-in at the rural hotel in the chosen village. Monitor briefs you on routes, wildlife and timing. Dinner at a recommended local mesón.
Canuto and relict flora

8:30 departure to the canuto (with or without private guide). 4-5h inside the forest, picnic lunch on route. Back to hotel, rest. Free afternoon in Castellar or coast.
Short hike or coast

Breakfast. Options: short viewpoint hike (Cabrito, Algarrobo) or drive to Zahara de los Atunes for a coastal lunch. Departure.

Rural hotel or rural house in village

2 nights in a 2-3* rural hotel or restored rural house in Los Barrios, Alcalá de los Gazules, Jimena or Castellar Viejo.

Restricted canuto permit

We handle official permit for Garganta del Capitán, Los Acebuches or La Sauceda per availability. Capped at 30-50 people/day.
Canuto hike

8-10 km through the selected canuto: vertical walls, tree ferns, rhododendrons. 4-5h. Specialist monitor guidance.
Free morning: Castellar or coast

Free Sunday with map: Castellar de la Frontera (walled village), Jimena castle or tuna coast (Zahara, Barbate, 1h).

Who this fits

With friends Adventure Ecotourism Photography

Fits if you want pure, undeveloped nature and travel as a couple or group of 3-6. Great for photography or birding groups. Ideal plan October to April.

Doesn't fit if you want beach bars, fast pace or very young children (wet rocks in canutos). Summer not recommended (heat and reduced water in routes).

Do I need a mandatory guide?

For restricted canutos (Capitán, Acebuches, La Sauceda), entry is free with permit but we recommend a local guide for navigation and flora. For unrestricted routes, not needed.

Is it safe to walk the canutos?

Yes, paths are well marked. Just caution with wet rock and, in heavy rain, avoid the narrower ones (flash flood risk).

Will we see deer and wild boar?

Probability: red deer yes, especially at dawn/dusk in open zones. Wild boar also, more elusive. Griffon vulture and Bonelli's eagle almost guaranteed at the Cabrito viewpoint.

Can I extend to 3 nights?

Yes, prorated rate. We recommend that third day for the tuna coast (Zahara, Barbate) or a different canuto.
