Description

The Monsalud Monastery is a ruined 12th-century Cistercian abbey in Córcoles (Guadalajara). Founded in 1167, it was one of the first Cistercian monasteries in Castile. Its ruins preserve the abbey church with pointed arches, the Gothic cloister with carved columns and capitals, and the chapter house.

The ensemble is one of the finest examples of ruined Cistercian architecture in Spain, with a melancholic beauty that draws photographers and heritage enthusiasts. The guided tour (€3) explains medieval monastic life and the history of the monastery.

It is 21 km from Pareja (Entrepeñas reservoir) and can be combined with a visit to Trillo and its waterfalls.
