Description

Covarrubias is a medieval town on the banks of the River Arlanza (Burgos), considered the cradle of Castile. Its historic centre, a listed Cultural Heritage Site, preserves timber-framed houses with arcades, the Gothic collegiate church of San Cosme and San Damián housing the tomb of Fernán González (first independent count of Castile), and the 10th-century Fernán González Tower.

The Plaza de Doña Urraca, with its arcades and noble houses, is one of the most photogenic spots in inland Spain. The riverside walk along the Arlanza and the medieval bridge complete the tour.

Covarrubias is 40 km from Burgos and Santo Domingo de Silos, where Benedictine monks sing Gregorian chant. Castilian gastronomy (roast lamb, Burgos black pudding, fresh cheese) is enjoyed in the village taverns.
