Discover Covarrubias

Covarrubias is a medieval town in southern Burgos considered the cradle of Castile. Its historic centre, a listed Cultural Heritage Site, preserves exceptional Castilian vernacular architecture: timber-framed houses with arcades, the collegiate church of San Cosme and San Damián (Gothic, housing the tomb of Fernán González) and the Fernán González Tower (10th century), one of the oldest towers in Castile. The town stretches along the River Arlanza, with a pleasant riverside walk and a medieval bridge. The Plaza de Doña Urraca, with its arcades and noble houses, is one of the most photogenic spots in inland Spain. Covarrubias is the starting point for the Arlanza Route and the Yecla Gorge, and lies 40 km from Burgos and Santo Domingo de Silos (with its Romanesque cloister and the monks' Gregorian chants). Castilian gastronomy (roast lamb, Burgos black pudding, fresh cheese) is enjoyed in the village taverns.
