Context
The Puras de Villafranca mining complex, located in a valley on the northeastern edge of the Sierra de la Demanda, houses Spain's oldest manganese mine. This historic site includes several real mines and original structures such as washers and small watchtowers, reflecting 19th-century mining activity. The cool, damp air inside the tunnels transports visitors back to that era.
The Experience
For approximately two hours, you’ll walk through authentic manganese tunnels with rough walls and visible mineral veins. The tour features immersive soundscapes that recreate the ambient sounds of the mine and soft lighting that simulates the glow of 19th-century miner lamps, creating a deeply atmospheric experience. You’ll also visit adjacent structures like the mineral washer and a small power station, with detailed explanations provided by the guide.
For Whom
This activity is ideal for families with children aged 6 and older, school groups, and anyone interested in industrial history and mining heritage. It is not recommended for individuals with limited mobility, those with claustrophobia, or children under 6 due to uneven floors and dark, confined spaces.
Local Context
Mining has long been a key economic and cultural force in this region. The local community preserves this legacy through the conservation of the complex and the active sharing of its history. The site is integrated with nearby natural and cultural routes, including the Dehesa de Hayas and the Cueva de Fuentemolinos, offering a rich, layered experience of the area’s heritage.
