Discover Albacete

Albacete combines the wide Manchegan plateau with a mountain range that gives rise to rivers. To the south, the Sierra de Alcaraz reaches 1,800 metres and shelters the headwaters of the Mundo and Júcar rivers, reachable by hiking routes through beech and pine forest. The source of the Mundo river — a waterfall dropping from a cave at 1,700 metres — is the endpoint of a half-day excursion with 400 metres of elevation gain. Las Lagunas de Ruidera, on the border with Ciudad Real, form a chain of fifteen lakes connected by natural waterfalls. Kayak and paddleboard let you explore the navigable stretches, where blues and greens shift with the changing light. The village of Alcalá del Júcar, perched above a meander of the river, has a sport-climbing sector in its gorge with mid-grade limestone routes. On the plateau, the Vía Verde del Valle de Alcudia follows 46 kilometres of an old mining railway on gentle gradients suitable for mountain biking and long walks alike. In spring, lavender and rosemary in bloom scent the air along the entire route.

Highlights

  • • Source of the Mundo river: waterfall from a cave at 1,700 m
  • • Lagunas de Ruidera: kayak across fifteen connected lakes
  • • Rock climbing in Alcalá del Júcar gorge on limestone
  • • Vía Verde del Valle de Alcudia: 46 km on a former mining railway
  • • Hiking through beech forests in the Sierra de Alcaraz up to 1,800 m

Best time to visit

Spring (April–June) and autumn (September–October) offer the best balance: temperatures between 15 and 25 °C, without the August storms or winter cold in the sierra. Lagunas de Ruidera show their best colour in May.

Practical tips

For the Mundo river source, set out early in summer: the car park fills up before 10:00. At Lagunas de Ruidera, kayaking is restricted in some natural park zones; check the boundaries before launching. The Alcalá del Júcar climbing sector is accessed from the village itself; bring at least a 60 m rope for the longer routes.

Frequently asked questions sobre Albacete

May to June brings higher water levels after spring rains, the turquoise colour is at its best and the temperature is comfortable for swimming. July and August are the busiest months; book kayak rentals in advance.
The out-and-back route from the car park covers about 12 km with 400 m of elevation gain. No technical gear is needed: trekking boots and poles for the descent are sufficient.
The Alcalá del Júcar sector has routes from 5b to 7a on compact limestone. The beginner lines are well-bolted and short — 15 to 20 metres — suitable for those learning with a guide.
It is designed for mountain or trekking bikes. The surface alternates between compacted gravel and dirt sections; a road bike with narrow tyres is not the most comfortable choice for the full 46 km.
