Description

The Collegiate Church of Santa Cruz de Castaneda is considered the jewel of Cantabrian Romanesque. Declared a National Monument in 1930, its origins trace to a 9th-10th century Benedictine monastery transformed into a collegiate church in the 12th century.

The current 12th-century building has a Latin cross plan with three apses. The rounded portal features eight archivolts on columns with capitals depicting serpents and monsters. Inside, highlights include 14th-15th century Gothic sculptures, the tomb of Munio Gonzalez (abbot of Castaneda), a Gothic calvary in the central apse and images of the Virgen del Rosario and Virgen de la Manzana.

Located on the Way of Saint James, the collegiate church has a Romanesque Interpretation Centre that contextualises this church within Cantabria's rich Romanesque heritage.
