Description

Argueso Castle (Castle of San Vicente) is a medieval fortress crowning a hilltop at 979 metres altitude in the Hermandad de Campoo de Suso, overlooking the ancient route between the coast and Castilla via the Saja valley. Declared a Cultural Heritage Site in 1983.

Two towers from the 13th and 14th centuries, joined by a 15th-century central building, form the complex. The courtyard preserves the remains of a 9th-century hermitage dedicated to San Vicente and an early medieval necropolis from the 9th-10th centuries. It belonged to the House of la Vega and later to the Mendoza lineage (Marquisate of Argueso, 1475).

Restored and open to the public since 1999, it hosts historical reenactments, falconry exhibitions, concerts and civil weddings. Views from the tower span the entire Campoo region to the Ebro Reservoir.
