Description

This is the serious stretch of the upper Ebro: nine kilometers between Montesclaros and Aldea de Ebro, with consecutive grade III rapids that force you to paddle through them. You don't just float down the river, you negotiate it: you must read the tongue of water, enter straight, and pull the paddle at the right moment to avoid getting sideways.

You navigate in a canoe-raft, an inflatable soft-bottomed vessel that absorbs impacts against the rocks and rights itself if it capsizes—which, on this stretch, is quite possible. A guide goes with each group, and the session begins on the shore explaining positioning, power strokes, and what to do if you end up in the water.

The flow is regulated by the reservoir dam, so the stretch maintains its level even in summer, when the rest of the northern rivers run dry. The descent lasts between one hour and forty-five minutes and two hours; the entire activity takes about three and a half hours, including preparation, briefings, and transport.

No prior experience is required, but sufficient physical fitness to paddle seriously and comfort in the water is necessary: the water comes out cold from the bottom of the dam and the rapids do not wait.

Expert Recommendations

Come wearing a swimsuit and bring dry clothes, a towel, and closed-toe footwear that can get wet: flip-flops get lost in the first rapid. The water from the dam is cold all year, so a wetsuit is appreciated even if it's hot. Leave your phone in the car—no dry bag will save it—and ask about the day's flow: it decides how the section behaves.

Physical Requirements

Requires physical fitness: nine kilometers of consecutive grade III rapids where you must paddle hard, not just drift. You must know how to swim and be comfortable in cold, moving water, as capsizing is possible. Not suitable for children or those inexperienced in the water.

About the Area

We are in Campoo and Valderredible, south of Cantabria, where the landscape stops being Cantabrian and becomes high plateau: oak groves, hay meadows, and stone villages above 800 meters. The Ebro flows here, nestled between slopes, downstream from the reservoir that floods an entire valley to the north. Reinosa, the regional hub, is fifteen minutes away and has all services; the Romanesque collegiate church of Montesclaros and the rock-cut churches of Valderredible are a stone's throw away. It is an area with much less tourism than the coast, and it shows.

Frequently Asked Questions

Get answers about Canoe-rafting through the Ebro river rapids in Campoo

No, but physical fitness and comfort in the water are necessary. The guide explains the technique on the shore, and in the rapids, you actually have to paddle: it is not a contemplative descent.
Rapids with irregular waves and mandatory passages that require maneuvering. They are not the highest on the scale, but they are consecutive and do not forgive being distracted.
It is possible. The canoe-raft is inflatable and can be righted on the spot; the guide explains before setting off what to do if you end up in the water: feet forward, facing downstream.
This is not the recommended section. For children and beginners, there is the basic five-kilometer route upstream.
Yes. The flow is released by the Ebro reservoir dam, so the section maintains its level in July and August. The water, however, is cold.
