The route: three sections and four bridges
The via ferrata dels Patacons is located at La Mussara, in the heart of the Serra de Prades (Tarragona). The route is divided into three clearly differentiated sections offering a wide variety of passages: vertical climbs, diagonal traverses, crack moves and, above all, four suspended Nepalese bridges that cover tens of metres of exposure above the void. The longest of them reaches 28 metres, followed by one of 22 metres. The final section ends with a 10 m abseil that brings participants back to the ground — a highly technical and satisfying conclusion. The total duration is between 4 and 5 hours from arrival at the meeting point.
Level K3/K4: technical and demanding
The K3/K4 rating places this via ferrata at the upper end of the range for climbers without specific technical training. Upper body strength, familiarity with vertical exposure and the ability to maintain focus for several hours are all required. The final abseil demands careful execution of the guide's instructions. Minimum age 14 with adequate physical fitness. The certified mountain guide explains each technique before it is attempted.
Practical information
The Serra de Prades is an inland area of Tarragona, close to the well-known Siurana climbing sector. Access to La Mussara is by car (no direct public transport to the area). Bring 1.5 litres of water per person, as heat can be intense in spring and especially in summer (July and August are strongly inadvisable). Sun protection is essential. Temperature in shaded sections is pleasant, but south-facing passages heat up quickly.
