The route: 800 m, 200 m of elevation and an underground section
The Tossal de les Venes via ferrata is located at Rojalons, within the municipality of Montblanc (Conca de Barberà, Tarragona). The route covers 800 metres with 200 metres of elevation gain and offers two options that share the same start but diverge at the most distinctive section: the underground passage. The K2 option follows the exterior face of the rock, while the K4 option enters the inside of the mountain through chasms and crevices, in a completely dark environment lit only by the headlamp included with the equipment. This section is what makes the route unique in Spain. The approach from the meeting point takes 20 minutes and the descent 30 minutes.
Level K2 or K4: two activities in one
The K2 option is accessible for people with some level of fitness or limited prior via ferrata experience. Minimum age 12. The K4 option, including the underground section, adds potential claustrophobia and greater technical demands — it is suited to those who already have via ferrata experience and want a different kind of adventure. Both options are guided throughout by a certified mountain guide. Not suitable for people with claustrophobia, as the K4 underground section is confined and dark.
Practical information
The headlamp is included in the equipment for the underground section. Layered clothing is recommended: the exterior can be warm in spring and summer, but the inside of the mountain maintains a constant cool temperature. Bring 1.5 litres of water. Access is by car (rural area without public transport). Montblanc, a few minutes from Rojalons, is one of the best-preserved medieval walled towns in Catalonia and combines perfectly with the activity.
