Context
Caving in Naveces takes place within the natural caves of the Picos de Europa, a protected karst landscape featuring exceptional geological formations. The guided tour covers approximately two hours through a network of underground passages, maintaining a constant cool temperature of 10–12°C. Visitors encounter a rich variety of calcareous structures, including stalactites and flowstone deposits. The cool, damp air carries the earthy scent of wet soil, characteristic of deep cave environments.
The Experience
Led by certified caving instructors, participants traverse horizontal galleries and navigate challenging sections such as narrow crawl spaces (gateras), steep drops (destrepes), and vertical shafts (chimeneas). The journey includes a visit to the Hall of Flowstones, where absolute silence and natural light effects create a deeply immersive sensory atmosphere. The rough texture of the rock formations and the soft echo of footsteps deepen the sense of being in a cool, mysterious subterranean world.
For Whom
This activity is suitable for individuals with basic physical fitness and children aged 10 and older who can follow instructions and maneuver through crawling and low-clearance sections. Not recommended for those with severe claustrophobia or limited mobility that would hinder safe passage through physical obstacles.
